Proteins are synthesized on ribosomes within cells. Ribosomes can be either free-floating in the cytoplasm or attached to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Proteins synthesized on ribosomes attached to the ER are often destined for export or insertion into membranes, while those on free ribosomes generally remain within the cytoplasm.
