Lipids are synthesized in the smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER), while proteins are synthesized in the rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER). The RER gets its name from the ribosomes attached to its surface, which are responsible for protein synthesis. These synthesized lipids and proteins are then used to build the cell membrane.
