Amphoteric oxides are metal oxides that can react with both acids and bases, exhibiting both acidic and basic properties. Examples include aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃) and zinc oxide (ZnO).
Elaboration:
Amphoteric oxides, also known as amphiprotic oxides, are unique because they can act as either an acid or a base, depending on the reaction conditions.
Examples:
Aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃):
This compound reacts with acids to form aluminium salts and water, and with bases to form aluminate salts and water.
Zinc oxide (ZnO):
Similarly, zinc oxide reacts with both acids and bases to form salts and water, demonstrating its amphoteric nature.
