Soil

Rajasthan is a desert state in India. Once while travelling to Rajasthan by train, Boojho observed several streams and rivulets of rain water during the journey but to his surprise he did not see streams of water in the desert region even during rains. Help Boojho find a suitable explanation for this.

In desert regions like Rajasthan, rainwater quickly seeps into the sandy soil rather than forming streams. This is because the sand’s porous nature allows the water to percolate downward, making it difficult for water to flow on the surface as a stream.
Elaboration:
Porous Soil:
Deserts are primarily made up of sand, which has small spaces between the grains of sand. These spaces allow rainwater to easily seep into the ground.
Percolation:
The process of water moving downwards through the soil is called percolation. In desert environments, the rate of percolation is high, causing water to quickly disappear into the ground.
Lack of Surface Streams:
Because the rainwater quickly seeps into the soil, it does not form continuous streams or rivers on the surface, even during heavy rainfall.
