If an earthquake strikes while inside, the three main precautions are: (1) Drop, Cover, and Hold On: Immediately get down to the ground, cover your head and neck, and if possible, seek shelter under a sturdy table or desk. (2) Stay away from windows and outside doors: These areas are particularly dangerous due to falling glass and debris. (3) If in bed, stay there and protect your head with a pillow: Do not try to get up, as movement can be dangerous during the shaking.
Elaboration:
Drop, Cover, and Hold On:
This is the fundamental safety advice during an earthquake. Dropping to the ground prevents you from being knocked down. Covering your head protects you from falling objects. If possible, seek shelter under a sturdy piece of furniture for added protection, as the framework of the furniture will help absorb some of the vibrations.
Avoid windows and outside doors:
These areas are vulnerable to falling glass, shattered panes, and potential structural collapse. Staying away from them significantly reduces the risk of injury.
If in bed, stay there and protect your head:
If you are already in bed when the earthquake starts, the safest action is to stay there, protect your head with a pillow, and hold on until the shaking subsides. Moving around can be dangerous during the shaking.
