What is parturition? Which hormones are involved in induction of parturition?
Parturition is the process of giving birth — the expulsion of the fully developed fetus from the uterus at the end of pregnancy. It marks the end of gestation and the beginning of extra-uterine life for the baby.
Hormones Involved in Induction of Parturition:
Oxytocin
Secreted by: Posterior pituitary gland
Function: Stimulates strong uterine contractions to push the baby out during labor.
Relaxin
Secreted by: Ovary and placenta
Function: Relaxes pelvic ligaments and softens the cervix to facilitate delivery.
Prostaglandins
Secreted by: Placenta and uterine tissues
Function: Enhance uterine contractions and help in cervical dilation.
Estrogens
Function: Increase the sensitivity of the uterus to oxytocin, preparing it for labor.
Cortisol (from the fetus)
Function: Matures fetal organs and plays a role in initiating the hormonal cascade for labor.
