The two main forces acting on a rocket immediately after launch are gravity pulling it downwards and thrust from the rocket engine pushing it upwards. The thrust is the reaction force generated by the exhaust gases being expelled from the rocket. While drag from the atmosphere is also present, it’s generally smaller than gravity and thrust, especially early in the launch.
