The primary process used to harness nuclear energy today is nuclear fission. In nuclear fission, a heavy atom, such as uranium, is split by bombarding it with neutrons, releasing a tremendous amount of energy in the form of heat. This heat is then used to generate steam, which turns turbines connected to generators, producing electricity.
